The importance of chemistry has been increased to a remarkably high degree due to its application in all aspects of man's life. Man's own existence is a result of various chemical processes. If any vital process ceases to function, his survival becomes difficult. Checking of disease in humankind or in other living organism is also based upon the knowledge of chemistry. Nuclear chemistry provides us radio isotopes for the treatment of many diseases, such as cancer and it gives us energy (atomic energy) which can be used in various fields for economic development. So, the study of chemistry is essential for the welfare of human beings and other living organisms.
Metallurgy, (Extraction of metals from ore) a chemical process,
has revolutionized the whole economy of the world. The big, complicated machines,
which are the backbone of modern civilization, are the direct result of the
present growth of iron and steel industry. A great advance has also been made
in the building materials. e.g., cement, paints, varnishes, glass, etc. are
used for a variety of purposes by man, is also controlled by chemical processes.
Chemistry also plays an important part in agriculture.
Barren soils have been brought under cultivation by using fertilizers. Vast
areas of land have been made productive because of the study of soil chemistry
and plant chemistry to meet the food demand of increasing population of the
world.
Industries, which are considered as backbone of economy of a country produce a large number of important materials, which render extremely useful help to the humankind, are gifts of the chemistry. These are food, synthetic fibers, plastics, soap, detergents, dyes, preservatives, fertilizers, medicines, rubber, cane sugar, alcohol, syrups etc.
Industrial chemistry is tremendously useful in manufacturing
industrial products, which promote the economy of the world.
Antiseptics and disinfectants have been prepared by
knowledge of chemistry for health, hygiene, and sanitation of our houses.
High explosives, which are used for the defence of a country,
have been prepared by chemists. Poisonous, tear gases, fire producers and fire extinguishers,
gas masks, etc. all play a particularly significant role in war and are
developed by the chemistry. Heavy guns, tanks, airplanes, war ships are all
made up mostly of metals, which are obtained by the chemical processes. Atom
bombs and hydrogen bombs are other gifts of chemistry due to fear of its use,
the nation’s feel secure and enjoy peace.
The use of above-mentioned important chemicals in our daily life also has some adverse effect as well. These chemicals kill our fellow humans and other animals. Struggles are being made through chemistry to eliminate all these ills from our environment and made our environment suitable for living. Thus, chemistry is responsible for modern civilization and plays a particularly vital role in all the aspects of man's life.
